Let me guess: you’ve thought about booking a destination wedding or a dream vacation through a travel advisor, but somewhere in the back of your mind a little voice asked, “But how do I know I can actually trust this person?”
That’s not paranoia. That’s wisdom.
The travel industry is filled with talented professionals — and, unfortunately, a handful of people who picked up a business card and a booking platform and called it a career. Knowing how to tell the difference isn’t just smart; it’s essential when you’re handing someone the keys to one of the most meaningful (and often expensive) experiences of your life.
So let’s talk about what to look for. And I’ll be upfront: I’m going to use myself as the example — because if I’m asking you to trust me, I should be willing to show my work.
What to Look for in a Travel Advisor
1. Real Credentials — Not Just a Pretty Website
Anyone can build a website. Credentials require actual work.
When evaluating a travel advisor, look for professional designations that demonstrate training, testing, and accountability. Industry organizations like The Travel Institute offer recognized certifications that require coursework, exams, and continuing education — these aren’t handed out; they’re earned.
Specialty certifications matter too. If you’re planning a destination wedding, look for a Certified Wedding Planner with specific destination wedding training. If you’re part of the LGBTQ+ community, an advisor who holds an LGBTQ+ Romance Travel Specialist designation has made a deliberate commitment to understanding your specific needs and working with LGBTQ+-affirming properties and destinations.
My credentials: Certified Wedding Planner, LGBTQ+ Romance Travel Specialist, DWHSA member, and IGLTA member.
2. Third-Party Accountability
Credentials tell you what someone knows. Accountability tells you how they operate.
The Better Business Bureau (BBB) accreditation is one of the most meaningful trust signals a small business can carry. It’s not automatic — businesses must apply, meet the BBB’s standards for ethical conduct, and commit to resolving any customer complaints in good faith. The BBB also reviews a business’s history, practices, and transparency before granting accreditation.
When you see that BBB seal, you’re not just seeing a logo. You’re seeing a business that chose accountability over anonymity.
I’ll be honest with you: pursuing BBB accreditation was a deliberate decision for me. It would have been easier not to. But I built Illusionz Travel around a simple belief — that every client deserves to know exactly who they’re working with. The BBB accreditation is one way I put that belief into practice.
3. A LinkedIn Profile That’s an Open Book
This one is underused, and I want to change that.
A LinkedIn profile is essentially a professional résumé that anyone can verify. It shows career history, certifications, recommendations from real people, and years of experience. Before you work with any advisor — including me — I genuinely encourage you to look them up.
What should you look for? A clear professional history, relevant experience in the travel or wedding industry, and ideally, recommendations or endorsements from past clients or colleagues. If someone’s LinkedIn profile is sparse, locked down, or nonexistent, that’s worth noting.
My LinkedIn profile is public and thorough. My background in travel, my certifications, my business history — it’s all there. Because if you’re trusting me to plan your destination wedding in Cancún or your honeymoon in Japan, you deserve more than my word. You deserve a paper trail.

4. Specialization Over Generalization
Would you hire a general contractor to do open-heart surgery? Of course not. Specialization matters.
A great travel advisor knows their lane. Look for someone who focuses specifically on what you need — whether that’s destination weddings, romance travel, a specific region of the world, or group travel. Generalists can be useful, but for high-stakes, emotionally significant travel, you want someone who has been in the weeds of exactly what you’re planning.
At Illusionz Travel, destination weddings and romance travel aren’t an afterthought — they’re the entire point. Japan travel has become one of my deepest specialties, including comprehensive knowledge of hotels, itineraries, and cultural nuances that make the difference between a good trip and an unforgettable one.
5. Transparent Communication from the Start
Pay attention to how an advisor communicates before you’ve even paid a dime. Are they responsive? Clear? Do they ask thoughtful questions, or do they jump straight to a sales pitch?
A trustworthy advisor should want to understand your vision before offering solutions. They should explain their process, be upfront about fees and payment structures, and make you feel like a person — not a transaction.
Why I Hold Myself to This Standard
I didn’t get into this business by accident.
I spent over 25 years in IT and banking before building Illusionz Travel into the full-service destination wedding and romance travel agency it is today. That background gave me something valuable: a deep respect for process, detail, and the trust that clients place in professionals.
When I pursued BBB accreditation, it wasn’t a marketing move. It was a commitment — to my clients and to myself — that I would operate with the kind of integrity that can withstand outside scrutiny. When I keep my LinkedIn profile updated and public, it’s because I believe transparency is a core part of being trustworthy, not just claiming to be.
And when clients ask me, “How do I know I can trust you?” — I love that question. I encourage it. Because the answer isn’t just “take my word for it.” The answer is: look me up. Check the credentials. Verify the accreditation. Read the LinkedIn profile. Ask the hard questions.
I’ve done the work to be someone worth trusting. And I’ll keep doing it.
